Our Story

We've been helping businesses navigate the messy world of international law since 2008. Started in a cramped Toronto office with just three lawyers who figured there had to be a better way to do cross-border deals.

How We Got Here

2008

The Beginning

Three lawyers, one shared vision, and way too much coffee. We opened our doors focusing on Canadian companies trying to expand internationally - mostly because we'd seen too many businesses get burned by unclear contracts and confusing regulations.

2011

Going Global

Established partnerships with law firms in 12 countries. Turns out when you treat international colleagues like actual humans instead of just referral sources, they wanna work with you. Who knew?

2014

Tech Integration

Started using cloud-based systems to manage cross-border transactions. Made life infinitely easier when dealing with clients across 6 time zones. Also meant we could actually close deals without endless email chains.

2017

Major Expansion

Moved to Bay Street. Added IP protection services after too many clients got their innovations ripped off overseas. Learned the hard way that protecting ideas matters as much as protecting capital.

2020

Pandemic Pivot

Like everyone else, went fully remote overnight. But it actually helped us serve clients better - turns out video calls work great for contract reviews, and nobody misses the commute to downtown Toronto.

2023

Specialization Focus

Doubled down on M&A advisory and regulatory compliance. The world's getting more complicated, not less, and businesses need lawyers who actually understand both the legal framework and the business reality.

2026

Today

18 lawyers, offices across North America, and relationships in 40+ countries. Still drinking too much coffee, but now we've got better equipment.

Meet the Team

Sarah Chen

Sarah Chen

Managing Partner

Been practicing international trade law for 15 years. Started her career at a big downtown firm but got tired of the billable hour grind. Now focuses on helping mid-size companies avoid the pitfalls that come with cross-border expansion.

Sarah's got her JD from Osgoode and an MBA from Rotman - yeah, she's overqualified. Speaks Mandarin fluently which comes in handy more often than you'd think. When she's not reviewing contracts, she's probably at a Raptors game or trying out new restaurants in Chinatown. Her approach? Cut through the legal jargon and tell clients what they actually need to know.

Marcus Thompson

Marcus Thompson

Senior Partner, Corporate Law

Handles most of our M&A work and corporate governance stuff. Spent 12 years doing big deals at Bay Street firms before joining us in 2013. He'll tell you straight up if a deal makes sense or if you're about to make an expensive mistake.

Marcus brings a no-nonsense approach that clients appreciate. Licensed in both Ontario and New York, which is useful when deals involve US entities. Outside the office, he coaches youth basketball and complains about the Leafs. His specialty is spotting red flags in due diligence - saved more than one client from a disastrous acquisition.

Elena Rodriguez

Elena Rodriguez

Partner, IP & Technology

Our go-to for anything involving intellectual property and tech licensing. Practiced in Silicon Valley for 8 years before moving to Toronto. If your company's value is in what you've created rather than what you own, she's who you want on your side.

Elena's background in software engineering (yeah, before law school) means she actually understands what developers are talking about. She's handled IP portfolios for startups through IPO and knows how to protect innovations without drowning clients in paperwork. Speaks Spanish and Portuguese, runs marathons, and has strong opinions about patent trolls.

What We Stand For

Straight Talk, No BS

Legal doesn't have to be complicated. We explain things in plain English (or French, or Mandarin if needed). You're paying for advice, not for us to sound smart using Latin phrases nobody understands anyway.

🌍

Actually Global

We don't just say we handle international work - we've got real relationships with firms and contacts worldwide. When your deal involves multiple jurisdictions, we know who to call and how things actually work on the ground, not just in theory.

💼

Business First

The law's important, sure, but it's a tool for getting deals done, not an obstacle. We focus on solutions that work for your business reality, not just what looks perfect on paper. Sometimes good enough on time beats perfect too late.

🤝

Long-Term Thinking

We're not trying to maximize billable hours. We'd rather build relationships that last years. That means sometimes we'll talk you out of spending money on stuff you don't need. Crazy concept, right?

Credentials & Recognition

Not to brag, but we've picked up some recognition over the years. More importantly, we've maintained perfect standing with every bar association and regulatory body we're part of.
